Snow chain by-law

Pessenger car:

Austria:
-Only snow chains complying with the Austrian standards V5117 or V5119 must be used. Drive assistance equipment in compliance with ÖNORM V5121 are not permitted by law.
During winter conditions (i.e., snow and slush) between November 1 and April 15, all passenger cars, station wagons or trucks up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must be fitted with winter tires on all wheels or must have snow chains mounted to the drive wheels.
As an alternative, snow chains are only permitted if the pavement is completely covered with snow or ice, or if the snow/ice-covered surface is only insignificant broken and the surface of the road will not be damaged by the chains.
Substantial fines must be paid if not complying with the snow chains by-law and difficulties might arise with the insurance company, in case of a claim.

Germany/ Switzerland/ France:
Achtung Autofahrer! (Caution all drivers!) Schneekettenpflicht! (Snow chains mandatory!)
When you see this sign, you may only continue your journey with proper snow chains installed on your tires.

Italy:
Achtung Autofahrer! (Caution all drivers!) Schneekettenpflicht! (Snow chains mandatory!)
When you see this sign, you may only continue your journey with proper snow chains installed on your tires.
In some mountain valleys, carrying snow chains may apply temporarily during any given time of the year.
